Mempo face mask in the me no shita bō style, Edo period (1603 - 1868)
In the usual design with a removable nose piece, the surface is varnished with brown chairo nuri lacquer, the back of the mask is varnished in vermilion red. With a powerful wick made of yak hair and pins for fixing the helmet's chin strap (kabutō no ō). The four-piece tare throat protection is varnished black, with decorative mimi ito lacing on the last part. A very nice element of the mask are the large, anatomically stylized ears (mimi) made in the uchidashi technique. This is a very characteristic variant of the face mask in very good condition.
