Iwai Yasurime ID: #3819

Menpo - Iwai

Me no shita bō face mask made by the famous Iwai armorer group , circa 1600. Iron sabiji mask with characteristic yasuri surface groove lines and a silver inlay moustache with a beard, in an older version without a removable nose piece and with silver teeth. The inside part of mask is painted with red urushi lacquer in the usual way. The five-piece tare made of black urushi overpainted steel is laced together from fluted scales with mimi ito on the last of them. This is a very high-quality type of early Iwai work, which some collectors consider to be the most beautiful type of face mask ever.
